My trip was full of His blessings upon my life!

Before I close the chapter on this part of my life, I want to summarize my time in Hanoi, Vietnam. The last weeks of my trip where spent with my friend Lisa that I had met back home in Wellsville, New York. Lisa works for our government in Hanoi; she invited me to come and spend some time with her since I was already in Asia.

Unfortunately, she had to work most of the time while I was there. But, we did get the weekends and Martin Luther King Day together. While she was off, we hit a pottery village, a silk village, Hanoi International Fellowship (church), and some awesome ethnic restaurants - Indian, Italian, Lebanonese (my first time), and, of course, Vietnamese. I always love trying new things! On top of this I was able to try a few street foods- bubble tea, fried banana, and some delicious noodle soup. This is really just a sampling of what we were able to do....we were busy!

While Lisa was working, I really did lots of exploring. I think I pretty much know most areas of the city of Hanoi. Most of this was discovered on foot, and a little on fantastic moto rides when I was in a hurry. I easily spent 2-3 hours a day walking around. Vietnam seemed to me to be like many of the other 3rd world Asian countries but with its own flavor. One that I really enjoyed and was comfortable in. On some of my outings I walked around West Lake 3 1/2 hour walked and just sat & relaxed in the warm environment, enjoyed the different scencery and people around me, visited a zoo, or maybe walked to the Old Quarter (old part of town with markets). It was also just a relaxing time with plenty of time to just chill and think or watch a DVD. I spent time reading my Bible, journaling and praying and seeking God's face and what He has for me.

Vietnam was very comfortable for me; I loved the whole "booneegee" as you say in Korean. This words means the environment and all your surroundings. It was just what I needed!

I am thankful for the people that God placed in my life that made this trip possible. I am deeply appreciative to them and to the people praying for me while I was gone. I took tons of pictures and journaled daily so that I would always remember this special time! :) I truly have no way of fully expressing the work done in my heart in and through this trip. But, I am grateful for it!

Day 41: Wednesday, 1/21

Ironically, I am now back in Seoul and my blog is working fine. It worked for the first few days in Hanoi, then I was unable to access it all. I repeatedly tried to be sure it wasn't an internet connectivity problem from my end. Amazingly, it works perfect; my last entry in Hanoi had been about the church service and Sunday activities. After that point, it no longer would access my blog pages. Hmmmm.....

I took a night flight from Hanoi to Seoul, and I feel exhausted. So, at this point, I am too tired to summarize my time in Vietnam. It was good! I will do a recap of my time there when I return home and close out my 6-week Asia trip....

Day 31: Sunday, 1/11

After enjoying some coffee and muffins, we caught a ride with two other women that I met the night before and headed to Hanoi International Fellowship. We didn't stay long just enough to quickly see the place and buy tickets for a show on Monday night. Because both of were tired, we turn around and taxied back home. I think we both just were too tired. Headed home, I heated up leftovers, while Lisa chatted with her dad. We enjoyed some TV episodes of one her favorite American programs. French toast & Coffee! We both lounged around talking for a long time. It's amazing how two ladies can start chatting and lose track of time. Somewhere along in the conversation we started talking about her household goods which had just arrived. The next thing you know we spent the rest of the morning and the afternoon arranging and rearranging furniture in her sitting area, living room, and dining room. It was really fun and productive. By 4pm, we had situated things in such a way that Lisa was happy with the setup; it looks great!

We made a quick run to the grocery store for a few things. Due to spending so much time fixing up the house, Lisa & I had to race back. At 6pm, we were scheduled to attend a going away party for one of her co-workers at another embassy lady's house. Thankfully, her house was in the same compound, so we were able to walk to her apartment just around the corner. Shortest walk yet! There about twelve other ladies who attended the party. Everyone had brought some appetizer. So we sat around talking and munching. It was amazing to me the number of countries where many of these women had traveled to and lived for work with the embassy. It was a nice evening out getting to know the people that Lisa work and socialize with.

Day 29: Friday, 1/9

I was up early and had every intention of heading out early, but sometimes things just don't go as planned. This is why I like vacations, you can do what you want when you want! ;) I did have some extra good time in the Word this morning reading about Paul's adventures in Asia.

My adventures in Asia today included walking out and exploring some more. I had forgotten how much I loved to see a new country on the way in. Snapped pictures here and there the whole way. Coming into Hanoi, it was amazing how the land looked so divided into sections for farming. Tall buildings and houses in groups....

After leaving the plane, the atmosphere of how the aiport felt and looked was incredibly different. There was a tenseness in the air. This remained until leaving the airport. Also, the Hanoi airport was by no means elaborate, very simple. My baggage took over an hour and fifteen minutes to come onto the converyor belt. After which I caught an airport to my friend Lisa's house, which was forty minutes away and cost 250,000VND. The ride also included more honking than I have heard probably in the last ten years. I kid you not! It was an enjoyable ride. The scenery was fantastic; Snapped pictures most of the way. I was a little anxious, because I didn't know where I was headed I only had an address I couldn't read and I couldn't call my friend. Thankfully, the taxi driver got me there! About ten minutes later Lisa came walking up. Nice to see her!

We sat and caught up for a few hours then we ventured out on the town. A little Italian restaurant with some yummy food was our choice for dinner. After dinner, we walked about 30 minutes back to her housing compound through many neighborhoods and passed the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. By this time and with a two hour time difference (being later for me), I was pretty much ready to crash! Catching up with a good friend and visiting a totally new country what more can I ask for!

Day 26: Tuesday, 1/6

Attempted to do some work on post with Bill, but it was very unproductive. This Sunday, I decided to visit Oppa's (Mr. Kang's) church - Vision Church. So along with running Amerasian Christian Academy, Oppa also pastors a Korean church. This is the church for some local Koreans some who have lived overseas and it also is the church for many of the students.

Oppa had Sunday School for the kids at 9:30am and then service at 11am. Since, Oppa is like a brother to me I am so glad that I decided to visit his church. I know it meant a lot to him! Plus, an extra bonus included watching his kids, Lydia & Timothy (and one other student), be baptized! It was extra special for me too. They have always called me - "Aunt Lori" - so it's like family!

Before church started I prayed that somehow I would at least be able to understand some of the service and message. Amazingly, I was able to sing half of the Korean songs and get the major points of the message. Thank you Jesus!

After lunch with everyone from Vision Church (many Korean churches have lunch together every Sunday), I spent the afternoon found me hanging around Shalom House working on a few projects, journaling, and chit-chatting. The Shalom service at 5pm with the soldiers was good. Bill did a cool lesson entitled - What Time Is It In Your Life? It was interactive and had everyone involved. The lesson really made everyone think about what where we were at and where we were headed! I headed out early and spent time with Lydia and the rest of the Kang family, because Lydia was flying back to the States to return to school in Illinois.....Enjoyed Baskin Robbins. Today, I joined them as we took a van ride into Seoul to a Korean bookstore that has lots of English books, music, and other neat goodies. After browsing and shopping for awhile, the group of six of us walked five minutes across the street and enjoyed a nice, but pricey lunch at Tony Roma's.

Deciding we wanted to hit the biggest bookstore in Korea just down the street ten minutes, we ventured out. On the way, we just happened to hit a Cold Stone. Yum! Then, we basically moved like sardines through Kyobo bookstore. It had to be one of the busiest times I have ever seen. Talk about no personal space. It was amazing how many bodies can fit in one bookstore. Although the bookstore is a city-block big.

On the way out, just outside the bookstore it was like a mob of girls on the front walk. Some famous Korean actor was present. You should have heard the girls screeching, so I had to join in, of course! ;)

By this the time, we returned after the hour and half ride home, it was 6pm and everybody was tired. So, I just wanted to write a little about my day before I head home to work on the songbook and relax for the evening too!

Day 22: Friday, 1/2

Bill and I had planned to meet for breakfast to get some work done. Bill over the past few years has been working on writing a biography of his life, so I helped him to get it organized. By the time we finished, it was lunch time.....

The afternoon I was able to sit and catch up with some family and friends back in the States. I enjoyed using Skype to chat with friends and my nieces and brother in Texas. I am excited for what God has for 2009 for me! He has great plans for us! Hmmmmm! That being said I am starting my new year out in another country that I am happy that I have had almost three weeks in so far!

I actually enjoyed a good portion of the day at home. I slept in some but I just lounged around and cleaned a little. Then, since it was Mrs. Kang's birthday, I decided to make everyone spaghetti. The kids (Timothy, Lydia, & John <an>) had all slept over. It's their grandma's house two floors lower so they sleep over a lot. Anyhow, I hit the supermarket for some groceries and rice cakes. We chowed down and still had leftovers! Woohoo! It's great to have days where you can just relax and hang with family/friends....

I came to Shalom House later in the day and worked on creating some tech manuals for Bill Meyers so that he can proficiently and successfully use some programs on his computer. I had made some updates and changes (I know we all love what we are used to, including Bill!) so I had to be sure he is comfortable with them. It was a nice time where I enjoyed my evening working while also sitting in front of a warm heater!

Day 20: Wednesday, 12/31

When you are overseas, it is really nice to be able to be signed on to an American military post. It isn't a huge deal for me since this is a short trip. But, it is a taste of home. You are able to purchase some of the foods and comforts from home. Although, I wasn't able to use the PX or Commissary, I did relish my large cup of Seattle's Best Coffee while utilizing the wireless internet.

After having pizza, Bill and I sat and worked for awhile on the beginning process of creating a new songbook for the Christian Servicemen worship service that takes place on Sunday evenings. I actually had made the last one over seven years ago. So, this one is in desperate need of an overhaul. This will be an ongoing process over the next week and maybe longer...

I then worked on helping Bill with getting his Vonage phone system working again so that he is able to call the States. For those of you that care (others just skip this paragraph!!). I went back through and restarted the modem, the next router, the Vonage box, the wireless router, and then the phone. Woohoo! Houston we have lift off!

The evening was spent dividing my time between the party with the Kangs and the Shalom House New Year's Eve Party. The Kangs had a party with their church (Vision Church). So, I was able to catch up on some Korean phrases and words and playing a traditional game called "yutnori." The other party we enjoyed just chatting, some ping pong, and snacks.

I may sound like a party pooper but I ended up going home early before midnight because I just was whipped from traveling. So, the new year started for me at home where it was nice and quiet and relaxing. :)

I am just really thankful for this time to be able to just have time where I am out of my normal, daily life/routines and yet be comfortable with people I love and know -- and yet have time to hear God speak lately and work in my heart. Being able to go to see Winae and Jeff (Miah and Jonathon) was a total blessing!

I spent most of my time in their little apartment (like a hotel room but longer term) visiting and playing with kids. I also enjoyed being called Aunt "Ori" :)

When I wasn't inside (Winae couldn't do much because she was recovering from delivery), I made trips to the local Walmart (surprise, surprise!), Wanjing Mall, and out for walks around the block. I did get to worship with other international believers all living in Beijing at Beijing International Christian Fellowship! What a blessing to be half way around the world and to sing with family and to hear God's Word proclaimed! It was a message that was timely for many! Amazing how God can tune it in to you no matter where you are at spiritually or geographically.....

I could say more; it was a quick trip amdist my time here that God blessed me with abundantly. Hmmmm......
Life is full of blessings all around when we are looking!
Mine seem very easy to see lately! I am back in Korea visiting a nation that was at what home to me and seeing friends that I have missed. I am very aware that I am blessed!

I spent the morning with the Kang family (James & HyeKyung, Lydia, and Timmy) . The kids each enjoyed their gifts and then we enjoyed some pancakes and time of chatting for quite awhile. Around noon Lydia & I came to Shalom House to help out with preparations for the Christmas dinner here scheduled for 5pm. It turned out that we had plenty of help, so it was an easy day. I interacted with everyone here and also caught up on a few emails/facebook when I could. Dinner was nice and relaxing. We had about 80 people who came. Of course, ham, sweet potatoes, corn - you know the works! :)

Break down & clean up started about 7pm. I headed home and hung out with everyone again. I am staying on the third floor adn the Kangs live on the 5th floor, so we are up and down all the time. Anyhow, they were hanging out and playing X-Box when I got arrived back at the apartment. And since I was heading off to Beijing bright and early, I finished packing to head out for five days.....

Day 13: Wednesday, 12/24

French Toast for breakfast with friends, Kang family (They live on the 5th floor. I am staying with his mom who lives on the 3rd floor). What a nice way to start one's day! I walked to Shalom House again around 10am and caught up on the internet. While doing this Forest (Korean staff at Shalom) and I had this awesome discussion about walking by faith and how we are growing! It is good to be around other brothers/sisters who encourage and challenge you in the Lord!

My Christmas present was an invitation out to one of the nicest Korean beef restaurants in town. By the time we finished we were very satisfied. It was yummy! Afterward, for the first time, since being back I had the opportunity for just a little bit to walk around downtown in the marketplace. Many things had changed, but it had the same feel as the marketplace I knew with vendors selling anything from fruit to fish to sandals, pots & pans...just about anything. I didn't have my camera, so this is a great excuse to head back down there. I was able to just relax, do some thinking, and just walk....What was an awesome way to spend Christmas Eve afternoon!

My evening consisted of sitting with what I consider my family here - the Kangs. Oppa (Mr. Kang) and I just sat around talking about books, websites, authors, etc. - just a great time. I have missed him! He is also my best friend's older brother. Later on in the evening, the rest of the family came and we all relaxed and just talked. Enjoyed a movie later on with Mrs. Kang - worldwide thing to do....

Day 12: Tuesday 12/23

No rice and kimchi this morning.....Enjoyed making pancakes. We (the Kang-McCann family) all sat around chatting and enjoying breakfast. Then, after a slow morning we headed off to E-Mart (not quite WalMart but a nice place to shop!) Kids are kids no matter where you go - they still want the laptop, Playstation 3, or XBox, etc. So, after some fun eye-shopping (for me), we headed to Baskin Robbins for a scoop. They continued to shop, and I headed off to Seoul again. This time to pick up my visa.

I enjoyed an hour and fifteen minute ride into Seoul and then a fifteen minute walk up the hill. I got there early. The same man who yelled at me for cutting into his lunch remembered me! :) He told me I would have to wait another hour. This was fine by me- I am enjoying reading Max Lucado's Traveling Light. Time passed and at the appointed time - he walked by me (the same man) and asked me what I was doing there. I almost busted out laughing. So, I should him my visa receipt. He told me to follow him into the office, and then he went to check on it. He said - they are going to do it now. Five minutes later I had my visa. Cracked me up! But, hey, I have my visa for Vietnam! Woohoo! I decided just to head back to Dongducheon.

I picked up some kimchi mandu and enjoyed them at Shalom House with Forest along with a grilled cheese. Hey, I like the best of both worlds - Korean and American! Headed home for the night, hitched a ride this time with Mr. Kang. I spent the rest of the night watching TV and burning DVDs for the school of the program.

What a full, good day! I was able to take the subway, which I have missed (this may seem strange) into Seoul! I needed to head into the Vietnamese Embassy. I went not really knowing where the embassy was located, but the general vicinity. Well, I discovered that I had forgotten my visa number back home in an email. So, I hit a PC room (everywhere all over Seoul - 1 hour for about $1.25) to check my email and retrieve the number. In so doing, I discovered one of my American friends still living in Seoul finally emailed me back with her phone number. So, I set off for the embassy hoping to meet up with her later.

It was by the grace of God and the help of some Korean people giving good directions that I found the embassy. It was not even close to where I thought it was. It was way up a street on a gigantic hill out in the middle of no where. I am still amazed I found it! When I got there, I upset the man because I cut into his lunch time. He let me know how unhappy he was. I was able to express my visa (or I wouldn't have been able to go), but this meant I had to go back the next day. So, I made the trek back down the hill.

I was free for the day. I called my friend Cynthia. She "happened" to be free and we spent a wonderful afternoon having lunch, walking the new riverwalk, having some good coffee, meeting her fiance, and being driven home.

Looking back over the day, I am still in awe of God's directing my steps. From the time I left the house, it really was an awesome day. I had tons and tons of exercise- easily walked 6-7 miles. I saw sights I hadn't seen in years. Signed on post was again by the director of Shalom House (the military servicemen's center). I even had time to grab a large cup of Seattle's Best Coffee! Woohoo! Headed off to West Casey Chapel to worship with all the soldiers and other foreigners! Worship (although I couldn't sing I was still blessed!) The chaplain shared about Jesus being the truth....He is only what can satisfy! Amen! It was much deeper and more encouraging/challenging!

For lunch I was invited to sit in on an "Inner Board" meeting for Shalom House to help tweak and improve. So, we went to the golf course restaurant on post. After eating lunch and having a normal afternoon like most people on Sunday, I headed to a 5pm Shalom House Service. We opened with some Christmas singing and then some praise and worship songs. I was asked to pray and Bill shared a message on how God uses simple, ordinary people (Luke 2). Instead of hanging around for the meal, I went out with Sanford (old friend, retired from military, now teaches at ACA) and his wife Sun-ah to a nice restaurant downtown for spicy chicken with veggies/noodles. We caught up on things over the past few years.... The morning was slower which was nicer, because I picked up a nasty cold somewhere along the way. From 11:00 on though was very full. We had an early school lunch, because then the whole school traipsed about a 1/2 mile away to a local church sanctuary for a dress rehearsal. I ended up holding hands with a little 3rd grader who just needed a little extra attention! Once there every grade ran through there practiced performance. From kindergarten on up, every grade level had some dance routine included. It was kind the show!

After trudging, back to school we concluded our day and send all the kids home for an hour or two. We all met back at the church early for our program at 6:30pm. So, Mr. Kang (principal & friend) put me in charge of photography and video taping. So, we have some awesome footage and shots of the evening. I hope to be putting together a DVD for the school over the next few day.

This afternoon with the building quite (you can imagine with school out!) a school stopped by to see Bill. While his friend talked to Bill, Sam and I just had a nice chat. We ventured from various topics about walking by faith and not sight to spiritual maturity to not being cool in high school. At the end of our conversation, we agreed that it is cool how "iron sharpens iron!"

Day 6: Wednesday 12/17

Did I mention that yesterday I was awakened to the TV in the other room blaring in Korean?! What an alarming (pun intended!) way to wake up! And today, a D2D teen texted me at 4:30am! Hmmm.....

While school was going on today, I spent quite a bit of the day working on Bill's computer tweaking this and that & petting his dog Shammer. As usual enjoyed lunches with the students and teachers. Although, it has been fun to be around the elementary kids, I have truly enjoyed getting to know the middle school and high school students. They are a great group of about 30 kids.

My friend Bill Meyers' ministry here is working with soldiers. I subsituted for Mr. Kang in middle school & high school classes. I basically gave tests. But, I really enjoyed interacting with the students. It was a blast. I reviewed them with them & just chatted about life. I even think I even learned all their names. Great time! In the evening I was invited to go to the teachers' Christmas dinner. We stuffed ourselves with pork kalbi (ribs) and all the side dishes and visited for a long time. Once school started I was able to visit someone of the classrooms and observe a few of the teachers interacting with their students. Then, during lunch they eat in to shifts 2nd - 4th and then 7th-11th in the main lounge. I especially enjoyed walking around and chatting with some of the students. There are Korean, American, Thai, Indonesian, Filipino, and seven other nationalities all intermixed. Most kids were bi-racial; it's quite the multicultural environment. They were all smiles and excited. Or maybe they just were really hungry and glad to be at lunch! I know this the favorite subject of many kids around the world!

The afternoon I ended fixing the computer power supply that I blew up! My first time coming to Korea in 1995 I fried a fan! This time it was even bigger and better! Big pop and lots of smoke! Then, I worked on some other computer projects. The evening was spent sitting around the dinner table with the Kangs and enjoying some good Korean food (boodaejiggae) and nice company chatting about students and family.....

Day 3: Sunday, 12/14

Once again, I was up way to early! Once again I got some exercise and walked to Shalom House about a mile away. Then, I attended church on post. Since, I am ahead of everyone back home I was able to pray for you all. We hit the food court after and I was able to catch up with an old friend named, Sanford, who loves Jesus and now teaches at ACA!

I then came back and went to meet up with the Kang's at Shalom House after their church service and I was fed some more food - this time Korean! It's sooo good - how do I say no!

My afternoon although fairly uneventful will forever be remembered because I blew up Bill's computers power supply. And, boy, did it ever pop and smoke! I broke the 110V / 220V rule - which I knew better. As soon as I did it - I knew! Isn't it amazing how quickly we realize our mistakes sometimes. :) Yet it is too late....

The evening I attended the service for the military men & women who come to Shalom House from 5-7pm. About 60 people showed up for singing, hearing the Word, dinner, and fellowship. I made it through most of it, but cut out early before the food since I kept falling asleep (jet lag thing again). Of course, when I got home, Omani (Korean word for mom) fed me before I crawled into bed.

Oh, I almost forgot on the way home I was able to buy Boogah Bbang (sweet bean shaped-fish dessert) from a street vendor. I was so excited. What memories flooded back! We used to hit up all the street vendors for all their specialties years ago. I think it is the little blessings in life that I really enjoy that bring the joy...I look forward to what else God has in store for me over the next few weeks!

Day 2: Saturday, 12/13

For those of you who know me well, know that I love to be on my computer and the internet. Well, I don't have internet at the house where I am staying, so I am going through quite a withdrawl. It is almost painful! :) I do have it at Shalom House (the Christian Servicemen Center & also the location of Amerasian Christian Academy). I am going to try to keep on top of this, but I have already fallen behind...

Sometimes when I fly I jet lag and sometimes I don't. This time I am whipped! I am doing well though & excited to have the opportunity to be back here. Since I arrived here in Dongducheon, I have been busy. On Saturday morning, I woke up really early and went for a walk around the city passing by sites that I used to know. However, there were so many new roads and buildings that it almost seems a new place. (I took pictures and posted if you want to see on my Facebook page. Just search by my email address.) I then tried to be signed on Camp Casey (local army post with 8,000 soldiers) but forgot my passport. So, Bill Meyers and I walked to a local Filipino/Korean restaurant where we enjoyed a nice American-style breakfast and enjoyed chatting. Amazing how many ethnicities are here now!....

Later in the afternoon I had the opportunity to attend a traditional Korean performance. ACA middle school students performed on Korean drums. Mr. Kang's mom (lady whom I staying with that is like family) performed with her group on a Korean drum called a puk. Boy, I have never seen a 78-year old lady get so into it! She was amazing!

My evening included dinner on post with Bill at nice American restaurant. It may sound like I am eating lots of American food. However, I am also raiding my fridge at home. You should have seen me the first time I opened it and saw all the Korean side dishes. I was like a little kid in a candy store!! I have had tons of rice and kimchis. I am loving it!

Day 1: 12/11-12/12 (Blurred together since I was on a plane so long!

Made it into Seoul around 5pm. Didn't sleep much on the plane, so I was slightly exhausted. But, because I was back in Korea again I was excited. My friend Bill met me at the airport along with another couple flying in. We drove back the 1 1/2 drive to DONGDUCHEON; arriving around 8:30pm. I was able to reminisce the whole back. Such familiar sights - Korean signs everywhere, the rugged, jagged mountains, the Han River, familiar roads and stores - it was nice to be back! Yet, as much as I remembered there was two to three times more that was newly constructed or changed. Amazing!

When I arrived in Dongducheon, my last place that I had lived in 2002 before heading back to the States, I was met by two old friends. It felt like I was home! Talked with people for a little bit and caught on past students lives/paths, then headed to Mr. Kang's mother's house to stay. It was good to see her again too (long time family friends!). Chatted for a short little bit and basically crashed at just before 11pm. I had been up for almost two days and I was ready for bed....
